The change in trends in East Asian cinema has already been evident at the Academy Awards, where Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea have been shortlisted for best international feature film over the past three years (with Parasite winning in 2020). Clearly, it’s time for canon, a series of films that fans can debate but that make the existence of Asian American cinema undeniable and generate some consensus about their quality and cultural impact.
